A Clinical Observation on Urinary Calculi in Traumatic Spinal Cord Injured Patient

Abstract
A clinical study was made on 72 cases of urinary calculi among the total number of 197 in spinal cord injured patients during the period from January, 1977 to September, 1981.
The results were as follows:

1. The incidence of urinary calculi was 72 cases (36.5%) in spinal cord injured patients.

2. The locational distribution of urinary calculi was in the bladder; 56 cases (28.4%), kidney; 8 cases (4.1%). ureter; 7 cases (3.5%), and urethra; 1 cases (0.5%).

3. Relation to spinal cord level and incidence of urinary calculi was cervical injury in 19 cases (9.6%), upper thoracic injury in 2 cases, lower thoracic injury in 27 cases (13.7%), lumber injury in 24 cases (12.2%) 4. Detection of calculi after injury of spinal cord was in 2 years; 29 cases (10.3%), 5 years; 53 cases (73.5%).

5. The most frequent urinary drainage method in spinal cord injury patients was suprapubic cystostomy in 43 cases (59.7%), and urethral catheterization in 12 cases (16.7%).

6. The incidence of recurrent urinary calculi was 23 cases (31.9%).

7. The calculi were removed by operation in 70 cases (97.6%), conservertive therapy in 2 cases (2.8%).
